The Healthcare Transparency Scorecard

Every state graded on healthcare price transparency. Some states make it easy to compare costs. Most don't.

🤖AI Overview

Despite federal mandates since 2021, hospital price transparency remains a work in progress. Our scorecard grades each state on price variation, competition, and data availability.

We graded all 50 states (plus DC) based on price chaos, provider competition, and data availability. A low chaos score means prices are more consistent and predictable. Higher competition means more provider choices. The overall grade combines these factors into a simple A-F score.

How does your state compare?

Methodology: Grades are calculated from three factors: price chaos score (how much procedure costs vary within the state), provider count (number of Medicare providers reporting data), and competition score (market concentration of providers). States with lower chaos, more providers, and less market concentration receive higher grades.
